Frognal & Fitzjohns

Frognal & Fitzjohns lies to the east of Hampstead Village and Belsize Village and to the west of Finchley Road.  The ward is named after the two wards that, other than Finchley Road, most define its geography: Fitzjohns Avenue in the south and Frognal in the north.

The ward is overwhelmingly residential, and shares a distinctive red-brick architecture typical of the mid-19th century, when it was built.  The area has a number of strong community groups, such as the Heath & Hampstead Society, Netherhall Neighbourhood Association, Hampstead Forum, and RedFrog.

The ward is represented on Camden Council by three local Conservative councillors: Henry Newman, Andrew Parkinson, and Gio Spinella.  They hold three regular councillors' surgeries each month:

  • 1st Saturday each month: outside Roni's, 39 Belsize Lane, from 10:30am to 12:30pm
  • 2nd Saturday each month: outside Barclays Bank, 28 Hampstead High St from 10:30am to 12.30pm
  • 3rd Monday of each month: St Luke's Church, Kidderpore Avenue, from 6:30pm to 7:30pm

For the last ten years, my partner and I have lived in Hampstead. We love it. I’m from something of a mixed family: one grandmother was an Istanbul-born Greek, the other a German Jew who fled the Nazis eventually training as a doctor at the Royal Free.

I’m passionate about protecting our local area and its unique heritage. I’m a keen runner and want to fight pollution and tackle gridlocked roads, such as Fitzjohn’s Avenue and Arkwright Road.

I’ve been a persistent campaigner to restore weekly bin collections and address the rise in littering and fly-tipping. And as a victim of a moped snatching myself, I know how much we need more police.

I’m the director of a think tank, and I previously worked in the Civil Service on government efficiency and prison reform. Before that, I taught politics and history at various universities. I hope to bring some of that experience and passion for reform to Camden Council.

I work as a barrister specialising in planning, environmental and property law.  In 2016, I was ranked in the top five planning barristers under the age of 35 in the country.

I often work for local residents’ groups opposing over-development and ensuring our conservation areas are protected.  As Vice Chair of Redfrog and adviser to the Hampstead Neighbourhood Forum, I have helped draft new neighbourhood plans for our area.

I previously worked as a teacher and was Head of History at a local comprehensive.  Ofsted described me as an ‘inspiring leader’ and my departmental leadership was judged ‘outstanding’.

I live off Kidderpore Avenue with my wife, and will use my knowledge of planning and education to work hard to ensure that this area continues to be such a fantastic place to live and work.

I have been proud to represent on the Council Frognal & Fitzjohns since 2010.

I am part-Welsh, part-Sicilian. Born in the UK, I have lived in New York, Rome, Palermo, Milan and Luxembourg and back to Camden. My Sicilian grandfather, Giovanni - for whom I am named - was a Socialist imprisoned by Italian Fascists in the 1920s. My Welsh grandfather Trevor - my middle name - served in the 8th Army in World War 2.

As your councillor I work with residents’ groups, families and Neighbourhood Forums, tackling issues such as conservation, planning and traffic. I’m a city professional with experience as a fiction writer and journalist. I am a UCS governor, and a member of the Howard League for Penal Reform.
